L’Age Baston: Testimonials

The unedited testimonials below were obtained from our guests with hardly any persuasion at all! They were content to bear witness to the fact that a L’Age Baston Holiday in France is essentially as described, of merchantable quality and fit for the purpose. We love it that so many guests are happy to repeat the experience so often. You should try it yourselves.

Just to thank you both so much for the marvelous week in your beautiful Chateau. Your hospitality was just amazing – in fact everything was perfect from start to finish. We will look forward to seeing you again next year or perhaps even sooner!

Thank you again for a fantastic experience at your beautiful home and art instruction from Jenny Halstead. I believe I was given more individualize instruction from Jenny (in a week) than I received from an entire semester at college level.

Your ambiance was great! The food was great! A bientot.

I wonder if you could possibly pass on our sincere thanks to John and Alex for such a well hosted holiday last week. Everything about L’Age Baston is really lovely, great house, rooms, facilities and grounds, and the food and hospitality were exceptional. My own experience doing painting with Lulu was also excellent. So all in all, a great holiday. Thanks to you too for dealing with our booking and our queries so helpfully and efficiently.

I can’t believe I’ve been back for nearly a week. I just had to write to ask you to thank John and Alex, on my behalf, for being the most perfect hosts and for our wonderful time at L’Age Baston. Maybe you’ve heard about our poetry group – we certainly made enough noise, singing and dancing into the early hours! We were serious when it came to our writing sessions though. Anyway, I loved every minute of my stay with them and felt genuinely sad to say goodbye. Who knows if we’ll ever meet again? I’d like to think so. Thank you too, for all your organisation – Audrey and I loved staying in the Guardian’s house. Warm regards.

I just had the most wonderful, relaxing, convivial vacation ever! Although the main purpose of my visit was to take the Intensive French course with Genevieve and Patrick, everything else about my stay was magic. From the moment of my booking with Victoria and pick-up at the station in Angouleme by John, I felt taken care of. In fact, two additional guests (one a repeat Bastonierre) arrived on the same train. By the end of the short trip to L’Age Baston, I felt I had already made new friends.

Somehow in a remote corner of France, Alexandra and John have found a way to bring their love of France and the French way of life to all comers. Meals were taken together at large tables, schedules were generously spaced to allow for down-time and exploration, yet for those who wanted to just mingle with other guests, the pool, the courtyard, and nightly happy hour made leaving the grounds seem silly.

My French tutors, Patrick and Genevieve were wonderful. They too, were part of the family atmosphere. Student groups were small, ranging from 5 students to 1 (me!). Both tutors had tremendous patience. Who knew Saint Patrick was alive and living in France?

Enough about ambience! The food was marvelous. Meals featured lots of fresh garden vegetables, baguettes, lovely French cheeses (a variety of cheeses at both lunch and dinner). And the wine…Bordeaux of course, at dinner, along with white wine and another wine (a rosé) at lunch. Classic French desserts in modest portions finished off lunches and dinners.

As to the rooms themselves, they were lovely. I traveled solo, and there was no single supplement. I had my own room and bathroom. My room overlooked the courtyard and was beautifully outfitted with a wonderful bed, perfect for sleeping after my dinners each night. During my trip, all of the guests were adults. Digital devices and televisions weren’t part of the program! Wi-fi was available.

It would be hard to say what I liked best about L’Age Baston. Everything seemed to gel. The number of repeat guests who were bringing friends along seemed to me the best recommendation of all.

I would return again in a heartbeat!

We arrived home last night after our meandering journey back with overnight stops in Saumur and St Malo. Everything went smoothly with no hitches or delays. Thank you again for being such wonderful hosts, making my 80th birthday present something I will always treasure. We set off hoping our stay would be like being at a friend’s house party. It was exactly that and so much more, everything more than our wildest expectations. And we were so lucky to have such a friendly and interesting set of fellow guests. From day one we gelled and had great fun together. Anne was an excellent tutor and good company. I may have been a bit disappointed with my efforts (all of which I shall work on here at home), but any failing was mine and not Anne’s. Feeling at ease and much laughter more than made it irrelevant. We just hope that things work out so that we can come again.

I had a truly lovely time at L’Age Baston, largely thanks to both John and Alex’s art in welcoming people into their home, and to Lulu’s sensitive and stimulating teaching. I was also fortunate in that the other students were very good company, so we formed a good little group. I will not hesitate in warmly recommending L’Age Baston to others.
