Charles Sluga At Chateau L’age Baston

Date: 22nd Sept 2018

Artist Charles SlugaAs an Artist Charles is confident, passionate and focussed. His paintings are thoughtful, ambitious, innovative, interpretive, assured, technical, analytical and responsive. His work is full of light and colour and life and infused with a particular kind of warmth.

A look at Charles’ work reveals an artist who combines exceptional technical competence with an inner vision. There is an abiding sense of curiosity here and his pictures seem to tell stories – but not obviously. In both his work and his teaching Charles reaches for and finds something that interprets and changes rather than simply represents.

Although a master of oils and acrylics he is actually a powerful advocate for water colour as “a bold and exciting medium”. Watercolour, he says, is like “sky-diving…they both involve risk, speed and adrenaline, but painting a huge watercolour is more exciting”.

Once described as “the Heston Blumenthal of the Art world” Charles cheerfully owns up to a science background and to using technology to help with his paintings. He not only values the habits of observation, experiment and problem-solving rationality that go with science but also admits to being bald and wearing dark-framed glasses!

His background and training, history and inclinations have led him step by step to this point in time. Here is a man at ease with his international reputation as an artist and his years of experience.

As a tutor he is exciting, challenging, motivational, inspirational, supportive, sympathetic, demanding, honest and fun. He’s in the habit of doing good things with artists and will be exploring the possibilities in the lovely surroundings of L’Age Baston from the 22nd September 2018. You would be welcome to join him.
